Turquoise the Blue Stone of Intrigue and Desire

Turquoise - A stone that has a unique and mystical attraction.
What come to mind when you hear the word Turquoise? Most of use probably let our thoughts speed off to the Southwest and Indian Country. It does seem to be a fact that most turquoise is found in arid climates and where copper is found.

It is know wonder then that the important turquoise states are Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado. Some more expensive turquoise comes from Iran and Tibet, where in most cases the matrix is black. The USA matrix is usually brown to white. Another location on earth of quality turquoise is Chuquicamata, Chile.

Some Scientific Facts that you may or may not be interested in:
The environment in most cases is a secondary near surface mineral, forming veins in weathering copper and alumina-rich rocks of desert regions. If you are a scientist at heart you probably already know that the chemical composition is: Turquoise - CuA1-6(PO-4)4(OH)8-4H20

Ok, now on to another aspect of the Blue Stone:
Turquoise Its Healing and Spiritual Properties.
There are those who believe that many stones have energy properties to them. It's not my thing since my wife and I are believers in Jesus Christ and Jehovah God.

Their beliefs are that the turquoise with the black lines in them are called Navajo turquoise and help you to stay in a state of love and connectedness with others. Thus making you feel at home no matter where you are. Another feature of the stone is that it supposedly draws out negative vibrations from a person by placing the turquoise under your feet. This dissipates negative energy by drawing it from the body.

One of the Native American Legends of Turquoise:
When the Rains came the Native American Indians danced and rejoiced. Their tears of joy mixed with the rain soaking into mother earth to become the SkyStone - Turquoise.
The sky stone - turquoise has been cherished by the Native American Indians for its beauty and imagined spiritual and life giving powers for thousands of years.

One of the longest lasting marriages of stone and metal is the joining of Turquoise to Sterling Silver and this marriage has been mastered by the Navajo Silversmiths. It is believed that this art began in the late 1880's in the Four Corners region or Dinetah area to the Navajo. Turquoise is not the only stone used by the Navajo silversmiths. The Navajo love color so you are likely to find red Coral, purple Sugilite, dark blue Lapis, green Malachite and many other beautiful combinations.

The rainy season is a symbol of greenery sprinkled around, fun and frolic, making merry, mucky boots, raincoat, colorful canopies and a piping hot cup of chocolate drink. For children, making paper boats and bidding them farewell through water puddles adds meaning to the season. However, paper boats are not the only craft option that children could choose to make and have fun with. There are a number of craft ideas that children may love to construct. Moreover, craft activities can be performed indoors. Thus, there is no need for your children to go out in the rains and have their share of fun when they can have dollops of it indoors. Splashed here are some of the most exciting rainy day activities that can make your child's holiday full of fun and enjoyment.

Some Reigning Ideas for Rainy Days

Luncheon Meet

When the heavens have made up their mind to operosely pour, why not take up a project that would transform a drab-looking lunch box into a fun-loving one! Let loose your imagination, and get the better of it, soon! Your stationery case is a must-have for this activity to shape up. Permanent marker pens, craft/construction paper, confetti, and the works. Now, this is where your creative gray matter comes into play. Sketch your favorite cartoon character, draw stick figures, pencil a panoramic scene, or chalk a fine pattern . . . just create, and keep those wings of imagination beating.

Cede a Seed of Love

Cards roll out colossal emotions, especially those wedded to words. With a few colorful sheets of construction paper, you would be well on your way to creating a fold of love and gratitude. First, zero down on a message that you would want the card to vesture. Next, dole out magazines from the store room. Sift through them and snip the alphabets that would aid you in forming the message. Cut out letters of varied colors and shapes. Variation in font size would only add to the raw aesthetics of the message. Paste the letters on the construction paper to form meaningful words, and subsequently your message. Indeed, a rainy day well thought out!

Go Lacey

Shoe laces have never served as a muse for anybody. Why don't you change the trend? Those doleful laces spiraled through the loops of your sports shoes sure deserve a makeover. You may do this all by yourself; however, a partner would help you see through the task better. Have your friend hold the lace from one end as you decoupage the lace. Glitter pens, permanent markers, stick on labels, miniature stencil set are a few cherry-picked additives that strike me at the moment!

Coronal Charms

This one is perfect to break the dull drone of a rainy day. Your ever-so-faithful companion -- craft paper -- can play protagonist. Freehand a few shapes or patterns, color them and glue them equidistantly on to a fancy, ropy thread. If drawing shapes is monotonous, you may well trace clouds, raindrops, a thunderbolt or an umbrella to salute the spirit of rain.

Play with Play Dough

When you have play dough with you on your playroom shelf, you don't have to worry about how to make your rainy day interesting. With play dough you could make a number of little objects. You could make a snowman, an umbrella, utensils, Halloween pumpkins, polka-dotted dresses . . . well, you name it and you can make it! Yes, it's that easy. You may also color your creations, letting them stand as it is for a few hours. As far as play dough is concerned, you may either make it all by yourself or have it picked from a nearby store. The choice is yours!

Fun Bookmarks

If you are fond of reading, why not make bookmarks! You could make colorful bookmarks by taking construction papers and tracing your favorite cartoon characters, flowers, kittens, cubs . . . just about anything. Cut out the shapes that you have created and place them on a thin, wooden stick. Probably, you may glue the shapes on ice-cream sticks. Let the bookmark roleplay as one, only when the sticks feel bone dry, else the neighboring pages would clump.

Collage Collection

Your friend's birthday coming up? Here is one craft idea that will entertain you through the lackadaisical rainy day, and keep you prepped up to enjoy the lovely weather outdoors. You may collect some of your pictures, cut them out and place them together to make a photo collage. This would serve to be a handmade gift for your dear friend. You may also tear out a few pages from an old magazine and snip it further into diminutive pieces. Keep a construction paper ready on which you have outlined a fruit or an animal of your liking. Stick these paper pieces with glue on the insides of the shape drawn.

Thermocol Thunder

Why not get thermocol to have some fun with? You may get a sheet of thermocol and cut out four, small circles -- one medium-sized and the other the biggest out of the lot. Stick the medium-sized thermocol circle on the biggest one. Now, stick the two small ones on either side of the biggest circle cut, being close to the medium-sized one. You could place the other two small circles on the biggest circle, side by side, nowhere near to the other pair of small circles placed. You have a miniature snowman ready! You could make little black dots to signify the buttons of his coat, stick a cone made of chart paper on the face for a pointed nose with two little eyes made with a black color marker. Dip cotton in a red paint and let it dry. Envelope the intersection of the medium-sized and the big thermocol circle to signify a muffler on his neck! You may also cut out the shape of a thunderbolt striking and color it as your heart desires!

Paper Windmill

Make a paper windmill by taking a chart paper and splashing color over it. But before you splash or spray colors, cut out the craft paper in circles and spray the paints on the cut out sheet. Fold the circle into a semi-circle and fold the semi-circle into a perfect half. You may open it up now and notice the pattern which is formed on the entire surface of the circle. Now make mini 1-cm folds in such a manner that the circle design resembles that of a china man's hand fan! Stick the circle on a sturdy stick. You may also attach it in the middle of a one-sided pointed stick. You have a spinning top now! Spin the top to see a mirage of designs.

These were some of the most enterprising and exciting rainy day crafts that you may get your child engrossed in, and snatch a break, especially when the heavens have no intentions of taking a break! However, all good things come to an end, don't they? A bristling rainy day, too, must come to a halt. Remember the poetry rhyme: "Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Little Johny wants to play!" Well, it is bound to bounce back, just to see you have a frolicking time!

These were some of the most enterprising and exciting rainy day crafts that you may get your child engrossed in, and snatch a break, especially when the heavens have no intentions of taking a break! However, all good things come to an end, don’t they? A bristling rainy day, too, must come to a halt. Remember the poetry rhyme: “Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day. Little Johny wants to play!” Well, it is bound to bounce back, just to see you have a frolicking time!

You Can Huff And Puff, But You Can't Blow Down An Alumalite Sign

Alumalite Signs Can Stand Up To Any Wolf Or Weather

It's a cautionary tale - the three little pigs construct three different dwellings from three different materials before figuring out which one is the most indestructible. Wow! Those poor pigs had to go through a lot of trouble to get it right. Think of how much time and effort those little pigs would have saved if they had gone with brick- or Alumalite- in the first place!

Wind, rain, sleet, snow, prolonged sun and freezing temperatures are no match for Alumalite signs. Don't be like the misguided little pigs, going with cheaper yet less reliable materials when ordering your custom sign. Go with an Alumalite sign the first time, and laugh when you see the wolf heading your way!

Anything Less Than An Alumalite Signs Might As Well Be Made Of Straw

When you hear the word aluminum, you may think of a thin, flimsy material. Aluminum itself is quite thin and malleable, but it is a fantastic sign material in that it is naturally immune to rust. For large, exterior signs, there is an impressive product known as Alumalite, an aluminum composite material that retains the best qualities of aluminum yet is nearly as strong as wood.

Alumalite signs have a corrugated polymer core that resists swelling and corrosion even when wet for extended periods. Because Alumalite signs are not made of wood, there is no chance of rotting. If the three little pigs had gone with Alumalite for their home, then they would be in it for the long haul!

What makes Alumalite signs so strong? The plastic core has a rigidity rating of excellent despite being so lightweight. In fact, though wood is the strongest core material for signs, it not always the most desirable because sometimes wood-based signs are too heavy to be installed in certain areas. Therefore, Alumalite signs are not only more weather-resistant, they are also more versatile due to their weight while remaining rigid and durable.

Alumalite signs may be as light as straw, but they are as strong as bricks!

Do Alumalite Signs Look As Attractive As Signs Made Of Other Materials?

The pigs probably would have fared well in a house made of cinder blocks and metal, too, but that wouldn't have been nearly as appealing as brick. Don't worry about the appearance of your Alumalite sign - it can be as attractive as you want it to be!

First of all, the faces of Alumalite signs have been baked in enamel before reaching our shop, giving them a smooth, glossy finish as well as additional strength. Secondly, they are available in a variety of colors from the factory: white, black, red, blue, green, and yellow, so you have many options in your custom design.

Third, Alumalite signs can be designed any way you want, with vinyl lettering and graphics easily applied to the face of the sign. And not only is the vinyl lettering easily applied to the sign, it is also easily removed for a new look! Yes, if after a while you decide to change the message on your Alumalite sign, the vinyl lettering comes right off and new lettering goes right on, with no trace of the old because the Alumalite surface is fade-resistant.

And last, for a truly professional look, the edges of Alumalite signs can be capped with black or white plastic trim. Capping your Alumalite sign give it a more corporate, finished look.

What Are The Uses For An Alumalite Sign?

To give you and idea of where you may have seen Alumalite signs, or how yours may be used, Alumalite signs are commonly used for outdoor back-lit signs, billboards, multiple panel signs, and even scoreboards for football games.

But that's not all - Alumalite signs are also lightweight enough to be hung on a fence or between two posts, so the size and function of your Alumalite sign is up to you!

What If The Wolf Tries To Blow Down My Alumalite Sign?

Alumalite signs are built to last a whole decade, but there are a still a few things to remember when caring for and displaying your Alumalite sign to ensure its long life.

The surface of an Alumalite sign can easily scratch, so never use anything abrasive when cleaning it. Warm water with a mild soap, applied with a very soft cloth (I recommend cloth diapers, actually), keep your Alumalite sign clean and shiny without risking unsightly scratches.

Also, keep in mind that the corrugated plastic core of an Alumalite sign is so lightweight because it is hollow. Therefore, tightening the screws by hand when mounting your sign is essential in preventing compression of the materials. Do not attempt to tighten the crew of your Alumalite sign any further once the screws are flush with the sign.

By following these simple steps of sign care, you can actually invite the wolf over and let him have a go at your Alumalite sign - eventually, he will run out of breath trying to destroy your sign.

So, What's The Moral Of The Story?

The moral of The Three Little Pigs is to build something strong the first time, and save yourself a lot of trouble in the future. So when deciding on the right custom sign for your exterior advertising needs, go with Alumalite and keep the wolf from your door!

If you look at the last decade of British films you'll see the same names crop up again and again. Danny Boyle, Guy Ritchie, Neil Marshall... These British directors have battled the wind, rain, mud and general gloom of their tiny isle to nip and tuck the face of British cinema and influence movie-makers and goers on a global scale.

How has British film experienced a new renaissance? And why? It's not just about the funding. It's about ideas, and adding a fresh spin on old ideas. It's about looking at tired old genres with new eyes, and it's an approach to the blockbuster where Britain has helped push the boundaries. Let's look at some of those genres, then move onto the top ten British films in the last decade...

The new-wave gangster caper

Do the gangsters of today have molls and leap on car sideboards? Sadly not - hence the rise of the British Cheeky Urban Gangster caper, as evinced by Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and several other mockney gangster movies... in fact, director Guy Ritchie created this new and commercially popular genre almost single-handedly. Attaguy.

The new-wave monster/horror movie

British directors Neil Marshall and Danny Boyle clearly grew up on a diet of comic books and late-night horror films, too much sugar and not enough vegetables. For which all movie-goers must be thankful. British monster films in the last ten years have been low on budget but high on cinematography, character acting and you've-just-GOT-to-tell-a-friend twists. Dog Soldiers, Severance, Creep, 28 Days Later (and the poor sequel, 28 Weeks Later)... These British films hit global cinemas with their innovative approach to tired old monster genres like werewolves and zombies. Speaking of which...

The Zom-Rom-Com

Yes, the zom-rom-com. Worth a mention all of its own, the zombie romance comedy is genre-splicing at its finest, and is entirely a recent British innovation. Nowadays the zom-rom-com is a film staple, with US-made Zombieland its most recent commercial success.

Let's take a look at some of those mainstream movies that put Britain back on the cinema-goer's map.

28 Days Later - 2002

Until 28 Days Later, zombies did what their master George A. Romero told them to do. Everyone knew a zombie walked slowly and craved brainnnnsss, because Dawn of the Dead said so.

Danny Boyle's film opened with an eerie and inspired scene promising something new - a loner in hospital scrubs, walking the empty streets of a wrecked and deserted London. There's something powerful in the image of a deserted city. The film ended with zombies who could have been you, or me, or your loved one - normal people but diseased - and fast. So terrifyingly fast. By updating the zombie format, this British monster film focused on what people are really scared of nowadays - disease, chaos, poverty and the unknown. And zombies who could outrun you. Suddenly the world woke up and realised there was more than one way to handle the zombie genre. After the success of 28 Days Later the zombie films followed thick and fast.

Dog Soldiers - 2002

Why should zombies get all the attention? Aren't werewolves fun too? Neil Marshall threw us a bone with this low-budget but fantastic-looking werewolf horror movie set in the gorgeous wilds of Scotland. Wait, you didn't know it was about werewolves? Forgive the spoiler - but the film was made eight years ago. To be fair, the film finishes with a delicious werewolf-related plot twist for those that don't yet know. What really made this film was the fantastic, gritty humour and interplay between the grizzled soldiers sent to investigate the disturbance, and the film was also helped by the moodily-shot atmosphere. A must for horror and action lovers - but one to avoid if you're not a fan of gore, however tasteful and considered the gore might be.

Shaun of the Dead - 2004

And here we have it... the zom-rom-com! A true love letter to Romero's Dawn of the Dead, with plenty of film nerd in-jokes. Shaun of the Dead made an international star of everyone's favourite ginger, Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Run Fat Boy Run). This film was witty, clever, charming, ridiculous... everything a zombie film has no right to be. Its bravery and humour made it a box office hit on both sides of the pond. A choice movie for anyone who likes zombies, romance, or comedy - and still a pretty safe bet for anyone who hates all the above. The ultimate in cross-genre success.

Children of Men - 2006

Children of Men. Was it sci-fi? Was it a drama? A thriller? An action movie? It was all of these things and none. Sci-fi haters considered it a beautiful and memorable film. Action movie lovers were thrilled by the powerful dust and rumble of the battle scenes. Everyone was moved by Michael Caine as a revolutionary old hippy, and the powerfully-handled concept of a pregnant woman in a near-future where fascists fight revolutionaries, refugee concentration camps abound and children are no more. Once again, the cinematography shone through to depict a beautiful, desolate rural England and a society torn apart by poverty and apocalyptic disease.

Casino Royale - 2006

It would be hard to list the top ten British movies of the last decade without namechecking Casino Royale - an entirely new cinematic makeover for England's favourite son, James Bond. Daniel Craig was an inspired choice - brutish, surly, violent and... blonde. And even naked on occasion. A world away from the suave James Bonds of the past, and more in keeping with the expectations of action movie goers of today. And what was more - M was a woman! Good heavens! Whatever next? Audiences flocked to see this revamped creation. Sadly, it currently looks like the James Bond franchise is winding down...

Son of Rambow - 2007

Imagine a long, semi-perfect English summer in the 1980s. It's only semi-perfect, because even on a long hot summer, being a young schoolboy is hormone hell. Two miss-matched boys are brought together to create their version of a Rambo sequel. They've only got a shabby old camera and a deserted wasteground, so their remake is by no means the big budget production of the original movie. But when the whole school joins in, and when the children start doing their own stunts, from kissing to explosions, this turns into a coming-of-age movie as iconic and classic and adult-friendly as Stand By Me, with a peculiarly bittersweet British slant.

Slumdog Millionaire - 2008

Danny Boyle is the darling of British cinema, constantly changing genres and finding new slants on old ideas which continue to satisfy an audience that demands so much more nowadays from its popcorn blockbuster movies. By 2008, Danny Boyle had a few worldwide film successes under his belt. There was Trainspotting, the black comedy where Ewan McGregor (Star Wars) made his name. There was 28 Days Later (zombie thriller, see above). There was also Sunshine, one of the few Danny Boyle films not to be considered as a top 10 best British film - an excellent but flawed atmospheric sci-fi thriller about some astronauts flying their ship into a dying sun to save the Earth.

In a total break from genre, Danny Boyle's next film, the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, took the world by storm. It's a rags to riches story of an 18 year old orphan on the slum streets of Mumbai, India, whose life is so peculiar that it miraculously provides him with the answers to the questions on the TV quiz "Who wants to be a Millionaire?" and earns him a fortune - and the attentions of the police. On paper, you might think this is a 'homework' movie - a movie you know you should see but feel is too earnest to be truly enjoyable. Cast your doubts aside. Feel-good without being sugar sweet, Slumdog Millionaire changed the lives of its actors (the young female lead was taken out of a Mumbai slum and given a wage, fame and an education to co-star). It will also probably change your perception of fate, poverty, slums, India and TV quiz shows.

Moon - 2009

Move over, Danny Boyle - isn't it time another British director got a crack at the whip? Moon is the debut movie by Duncan Jones - and it's won a BAFTA, another 17 film awards and countless nominations. Moon is the story of lone blue-collar astronaut Sam Bell who is struggling to stay sane as he reaches the end of his three year shift, desperate to return home to Earth, his wife and his daughter. As the movie tagline says, "250,000 miles from home, the hardest thing to face...is yourself". Moon is full of plot surprises, sterile moon beauty, impossibly fine acting from the leads (including Kevin Spacey as the computer), with a soundtrack to die for. Moon's not just a sci-fi film - it's a film about what it means to be human. And yes, it has some good gags in it. Nothing will prepare you for Moon... Except, possibly, 2001:A Space Odyssey. A must-see.

Sherlock Holmes - 2009

Sherlock Holmes is the latest offering from director Guy Ritchie, the ex Mrs. Madonna. Ritchie established himself as world-class with earlier successes like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (a love letter to the gangster caper, updated to a British East End setting for a modern audience).

A comedy action movie, Sherlock Holmes proves that when he's on form and not indulging himself, Guy Ritchie can produce the perfect action movie. The film benefits from inspired casting: Downey Jnr (Sherlock Holmes) and Jude Law (Doctor Watson) revisit and revamp the dynamics between the much-loved duo and are clearly having fun; in interviews the actors say they did indeed have a bromance, so well did they gel together as co-leads. Guy Ritchie's directorial quirks are put to fine use in the film, with jump-cuts and camera trickery adding to the meat of the plot rather than spoiling it. Lastly, the big budget is done justice with some great cinematography - if you want to see a thriving, foggy Victorian London and have no time machine, watching Sherlock Holmes is the best way to do it. One of the most enjoyable examples of a popcorn movie this decade.

Harry Brown - 2009

Director Daniel Barber is a relative newcomer on the British film scene. He's looked at the great American movies and dramas covering the grimy side of life (like the Wire) and thought - how can this be updated, to offer the same action, the same drama, the same thrill, the same grandness of scale - but from a uniquely British perspective?

Cue Harry Brown. What does the British public currently fear most? Chavs, probably - a derogatory name given to a poor and violent youth subculture. Harry Brown is a chav revenge fantasy - the story of an old war veteran on a British slum estate who sees the social destruction brought about to his community by chavs and decides to take matters into his own hands. British National Treasure Michael Caine takes the starring role and is a joy to watch as an old age pensioner who refuses to back down.

Most of these films received worldwide critical acclaim and packed cinema seats across the globe. You may have missed some of them the first time round - now's the chance to take a chance the next time you hire out a Blu-Ray or DVD.

Don't be put off by the British accents, because you won't be disappointed - you'll find yourself immersed by the lights, camera action of ten of the best British films this decade.

Wolf’s Rain Ost

If you look at the last decade of British films you’ll see the same names crop up again and again. Danny Boyle, Guy Ritchie, Neil Marshall… These British directors have battled the wind, rain, mud and general gloom of their tiny isle to nip and tuck the face of British cinema and influence movie-makers and goers on a global scale.

How has British film experienced a new renaissance? And why? It’s not just about the funding. It’s about ideas, and adding a fresh spin on old ideas. It’s about looking at tired old genres with new eyes, and it’s an approach to the blockbuster where Britain has helped push the boundaries. Let’s look at some of those genres, then move onto the top ten British films in the last decade…

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

The new-wave gangster caper

Do the gangsters of today have molls and leap on car sideboards? Sadly not – hence the rise of the British Cheeky Urban Gangster caper, as evinced by Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and several other mockney gangster movies… in fact, director Guy Ritchie created this new and commercially popular genre almost single-handedly. Attaguy.

The new-wave monster/horror movie

British directors Neil Marshall and Danny Boyle clearly grew up on a diet of comic books and late-night horror films, too much sugar and not enough vegetables. For which all movie-goers must be thankful. British monster films in the last ten years have been low on budget but high on cinematography, character acting and you’ve-just-GOT-to-tell-a-friend twists. Dog Soldiers, Severance, Creep, 28 Days Later (and the poor sequel, 28 Weeks Later)… These British films hit global cinemas with their innovative approach to tired old monster genres like werewolves and zombies. Speaking of which…

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

The Zom-Rom-Com

Yes, the zom-rom-com. Worth a mention all of its own, the zombie romance comedy is genre-splicing at its finest, and is entirely a recent British innovation. Nowadays the zom-rom-com is a film staple, with US-made Zombieland its most recent commercial success.

Let’s take a look at some of those mainstream movies that put Britain back on the cinema-goer’s map.

28 Days Later – 2002

Until 28 Days Later, zombies did what their master George A. Romero told them to do. Everyone knew a zombie walked slowly and craved brainnnnsss, because Dawn of the Dead said so.

Danny Boyle’s film opened with an eerie and inspired scene promising something new – a loner in hospital scrubs, walking the empty streets of a wrecked and deserted London. There’s something powerful in the image of a deserted city. The film ended with zombies who could have been you, or me, or your loved one – normal people but diseased – and fast. So terrifyingly fast. By updating the zombie format, this British monster film focused on what people are really scared of nowadays – disease, chaos, poverty and the unknown. And zombies who could outrun you. Suddenly the world woke up and realised there was more than one way to handle the zombie genre. After the success of 28 Days Later the zombie films followed thick and fast.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Dog Soldiers – 2002

Why should zombies get all the attention? Aren’t werewolves fun too? Neil Marshall threw us a bone with this low-budget but fantastic-looking werewolf horror movie set in the gorgeous wilds of Scotland. Wait, you didn’t know it was about werewolves? Forgive the spoiler – but the film was made eight years ago. To be fair, the film finishes with a delicious werewolf-related plot twist for those that don’t yet know. What really made this film was the fantastic, gritty humour and interplay between the grizzled soldiers sent to investigate the disturbance, and the film was also helped by the moodily-shot atmosphere. A must for horror and action lovers – but one to avoid if you’re not a fan of gore, however tasteful and considered the gore might be.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Shaun of the Dead – 2004

And here we have it… the zom-rom-com! A true love letter to Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, with plenty of film nerd in-jokes. Shaun of the Dead made an international star of everyone’s favourite ginger, Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Run Fat Boy Run). This film was witty, clever, charming, ridiculous… everything a zombie film has no right to be. Its bravery and humour made it a box office hit on both sides of the pond. A choice movie for anyone who likes zombies, romance, or comedy – and still a pretty safe bet for anyone who hates all the above. The ultimate in cross-genre success.

Children of Men – 2006

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Casino Royale – 2006

It would be hard to list the top ten British movies of the last decade without namechecking Casino Royale – an entirely new cinematic makeover for England’s favourite son, James Bond. Daniel Craig was an inspired choice – brutish, surly, violent and… blonde. And even naked on occasion. A world away from the suave James Bonds of the past, and more in keeping with the expectations of action movie goers of today. And what was more – M was a woman! Good heavens! Whatever next? Audiences flocked to see this revamped creation. Sadly, it currently looks like the James Bond franchise is winding down…

Son of Rambow – 2007

Imagine a long, semi-perfect English summer in the 1980s. It’s only semi-perfect, because even on a long hot summer, being a young schoolboy is hormone hell. Two miss-matched boys are brought together to create their version of a Rambo sequel. They’ve only got a shabby old camera and a deserted wasteground, so their remake is by no means the big budget production of the original movie. But when the whole school joins in, and when the children start doing their own stunts, from kissing to explosions, this turns into a coming-of-age movie as iconic and classic and adult-friendly as Stand By Me, with a peculiarly bittersweet British slant.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Slumdog Millionaire – 2008

Danny Boyle is the darling of British cinema, constantly changing genres and finding new slants on old ideas which continue to satisfy an audience that demands so much more nowadays from its popcorn blockbuster movies. By 2008, Danny Boyle had a few worldwide film successes under his belt. There was Trainspotting, the black comedy where Ewan McGregor (Star Wars) made his name. There was 28 Days Later (zombie thriller, see above). There was also Sunshine, one of the few Danny Boyle films not to be considered as a top 10 best British film – an excellent but flawed atmospheric sci-fi thriller about some astronauts flying their ship into a dying sun to save the Earth.

In a total break from genre, Danny Boyle’s next film, the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire, took the world by storm. It’s a rags to riches story of an 18 year old orphan on the slum streets of Mumbai, India, whose life is so peculiar that it miraculously provides him with the answers to the questions on the TV quiz “Who wants to be a Millionaire?” and earns him a fortune – and the attentions of the police. On paper, you might think this is a ‘homework’ movie – a movie you know you should see but feel is too earnest to be truly enjoyable.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Moon – 2009

Move over, Danny Boyle – isn’t it time another British director got a crack at the whip? Moon is the debut movie by Duncan Jones – and it’s won a BAFTA, another 17 film awards and countless nominations. Moon is the story of lone blue-collar astronaut Sam Bell who is struggling to stay sane as he reaches the end of his three year shift, desperate to return home to Earth, his wife and his daughter. As the movie tagline says, “250,000 miles from home, the hardest thing to face…is yourself”. Moon is full of plot surprises, sterile moon beauty, impossibly fine acting from the leads (including Kevin Spacey as the computer), with a soundtrack to die for. Moon’s not just a sci-fi film – it’s a film about what it means to be human. And yes, it has some good gags in it. Nothing will prepare you for Moon… Except, possibly, 2001:A Space Odyssey. A must-see.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Wolf’s Rain Ost

Sherlock Holmes – 2009

Sherlock Holmes is the latest offering from director Guy Ritchie, the ex Mrs. Madonna. Ritchie established himself as world-class with earlier successes like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (a love letter to the gangster caper, updated to a British East End setting for a modern audience).

A comedy action movie, Sherlock Holmes proves that when he’s on form and not indulging himself, Guy Ritchie can produce the perfect action movie. Guy Ritchie’s directorial quirks are put to fine use in the film, with jump-cuts and camera trickery adding to the meat of the plot rather than spoiling it. Lastly, the big budget is done justice with some great cinematography – if you want to see a thriving, foggy Victorian London and have no time machine, watching Sherlock Holmes is the best way to do it. One of the most enjoyable examples of a popcorn movie this decade.

Wolf's Rain Ost

Do you like the Great Outdoors, why not come to the Gold Coast, Queensland!!

I have been a local on the Gold Coast for the past 10 years and have found some really great daytrips from the Gold Coast. Here are a few examples of some really fun days out.

Mount Tamborine
Take a drive through the Gold Coast Hinterland to Mount Tamborine approx. hour drive from Surfers Paradise. If you go on a weekend or public holiday stop at Eagle Heights and check out the hang gliders, quite a colourful site. Visit the quaint village of Tamborine and drop into one of the many craft or coffee shops and just go for a stroll along the Gallery Walk. If you are feeling more energetic why not go for a bushwalk to one of the many lookouts in the area. My suggestion would be either the Curtis Falls or Witches Falls bushwalks which are quite spectacular when there is water cascading over the falls.
There are also quite a few wineries including the Cedar Creek Estate Winery, it has a purposely built cave which houses local glow worms, you can go on a tour where they explain about the glow worm life cycle and show you inside the glow worm cave, I took my children and thought that it was quite educational for them.

Mount Warning
If you like bushwalking I would recommend going to Mount Warning situated around 15 kms from Murwillumbah (an easy to hour drive from the Gold Coast). The drive is quite scenic through the many sugar cane plantations and past the working sugar mill. The walk to the top of Mount Warning takes around 5 hours return approx 4.4 kms each way, however be prepared this is a strenuous walk with a lot of steps and a very steep rope climb right at the top. However when you reach the top the views are spectacular and well worth the climb. If you are not that way inclined you could walk part of the way through the rainforest or take a very short 500m walk. A very scenic way to return would be through the Currumbin Valley, just take the turnoff to Currumbin at Murwillumbah.

Lamington National Park
Discover the green behind the gold around an hours drive from Canungra you will discover the natural side of the Gold Coast at O'Reillys. On the road to O'Reillys is the Canungra Valley Vineyards which is home to a platypus in the stream behind the Vineyards. At O'Reillys take one of the 160kms of graded walking tracks where you will discover waterfalls, spectacular lookouts and enchanting rainforest environments. Whilst at O'Reillys done forget to take a walk on the famous tree top walk a suspended walkway 20 metres above the forest floor. Also while youre there you can feed the native lorikeets and beautiful parrots.

It’s raining. In fact it has been raining most of the day. I’m from Arizona where rain is not a regular occurrence, so when I encounter a long bout of soppy weather I get a bit incredulous.

“You’ve been at this all day, don’t you think it’s time to move on?” I say to the clouds outside my window. Of course the rain doesn’t listen to me. It just keeps plink, plink, plinking on the roof, the patio and my muddy yard.

When we moved to the Pacific Northwest I knew we were in for some wet weather. I love the greenery here and I know it doesn’t get that way by accident. Yet, I’m annoyed. I keep looking for the sun and a rainbow that isn’t ready to appear - at least not yet.

Those of you who have lived in wet environments probably have no sympathy for my plight. This is not unusual. Most folks who have not suffered from a particular problem or situation do not have the ability to empathize. This is not limited to the weather. It is a rare person who has compassion for someone whose plight is unlike one from their own experience.

That is why I always find it interesting when I give talks about erasing negativity and someone invariably asks for advice on how to erase negativity in someone else.
The short answer for this is you cannot change the mindset of someone else. However, you have total control over your own thoughts, speech and actions. Even though most of us understand this, we still find ourselves wanting to change the horrible actions or behavior of someone else.

It’s like the conversation I’m having with the clouds. Say what I want, my opinion of the weather is not going to have any impact on the outcome. I can curse the clouds, sing a song of joy or go dancing naked in the streets. The rain is not going to stop until it’s good and ready.

So what is the point you ask? While we have total control over ourselves, we choose to have more thoughts, speech and actions condemning someone else. That attitude is a real joy sucker. My advice is to accept people for who they are. Sometimes that means staying the heck away from them. But waiting for them to change is as fruitless as cursing the rain.

Change yourself where you can and leave it at that. Mark Twain is quoted as saying, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” The same is true of trying to change others.

However, since it is impossible to interact in society without encountering negative folks, I suggest imagining yourself surrounded by white light and covered with an invisible protective shield where all negative thoughts and speech bounce off of you and back on the person who initiated the negativity. It’s like having a body umbrella.

With that in mind I’m going to stop complaining, suck it, put on my raincoat and umbrella and enjoy the afternoon. I may not be able to do anything about the weather, but I can do something about to encourage a sunnier disposition.

Having overcome an unusually warm winter like a two-inch speedbump, we are now in the season where precipitation is in no mood to waltz through the air. Rainy seasons are kicking in throughout the country, as the owners of things that can't be brought indoors are looking askew at gathering clouds, we invite everyone to consider getting a portable garage to keep possessions safe, dry and comfortable.

Two-wheeled transport has always had a particularly hard time with snow and rain, whether it's parked or out on the road. Getting caught four miles away from home on a bicycle, under a gathering cold April rain, is the world's most certain predictor of deep and multifaceted discomfort for the next hour. The fear of being erased from existence by a motorist with failing eyesight competes with the different ways that water insists on getting into one's clothes.

Throughout the years, bicyclists and motorcycle riders have been seen wrapped in many strange and uncomfortable contraptions in attempts to get home without rivulets of muddy water trailing in meanders on the hardwood floor. The desire to drape oneself in sheets of sweaty plastic is tempered by the need to keep the plastic out of brake pads, chains, gears and axles.

Once one does make it home, parking becomes an issue. A bicycle can be dragged up stairs, however ruinous the consequences may be for your floors and rugs. A motorcycle has to live outdoors and cast wistful glances through the curtains. This is why a considerate owner who doesn't have a solid garage – or, does have one, but has filled it to the roof with boxes and Aunt Mildred's musty furniture that is unusable but too filled with nostalgia to pawn off – will invest in a nice outdoor motorcycle shelter for the iron steed.

A Cycle Cabana is small, cheap and waterproof, so you can keep your Harley out of the rain. That isn't the only use for the contraptions – as the great William Gibson wrote, "the street finds its own uses for things." We at Calloway portable shelters have seen our portable garages used for myriad purposes, from storing firewood to hiding garden tools to hosting impromptu parties. A portable shelter can be of use for gardeners, fishers and do-it-yourself aficionados alike. Some people even get into "shelter hacking," using parts and components of a portable shelter to make structures such as attached canopies for decks and other constructions.

Whatever your needs, if you have a car or a motorcycle that you don't have garage space for, or simply a backyard that could use a bit of weatherproof space, a Calloway portable shelter is the way to go.

Springtime in the central Texas ranch lands is always full of surprises. Last year, after an unusually cold winter, we were looking forward to a spring full of showers and beautiful flowers. The drought that has been plaguing our central Texas land proved relentless all through last spring and summer. The wildflower season was less than stellar, and to add insult to injury, our already suffering Hamilton county ranch land had to endure one of the hottest, driest summers ever recorded.

Just when we thought it would never rain again the sky opened up and blessed the Top of the Hill Country with abundant rain. The spring of 2012 began early this year. The winter was mild, the temperatures spring-like and the abundant rainfall has covered our central Texas land with the most beautiful wildflowers I believe I've ever seen. The Bluebonnets and Texas Paintbrush are already in full bloom, and soon the Indian Blankets will take over as they are fading away. The red and blue landscape will soon be replaced by yellow and orange flowers in late April. By the end of the wildflower season you will have seen central Texas ranch land ablaze with every color in the rainbow.

As an additional boon the magnificent early spring has spurred all the wildlife into action. Every day as we sit on the porch gazing over our Hamilton county ranch valley, we observe turkeys strutting around. Rio Grande Turkey is the subspecies of Turkey that is most common in the central portion of the state. The antics of the toms to impress the hens provide endless hours of free entertainment. The fanned tail-feathers of the tom are a sight to behold.

One of God's most amazing creatures to decorate central Texas' Top of the Hill Country, the hummingbird, is back. This always heralds the return of spring. These little dynamos never slow down; they can fly at speeds averaging between 20 & 30 miles per hour, and when making his courtship dives the male can reach speeds up to 60 miles per hour. Because they can move their wings in a circular motion, they can fly in any direction. They also provide a source of entertainment as they chase off other birds and insects from their feeders.

Last, but not least, the welcome spring rains have made the fields and pastures of our Hamilton county ranchland fruitful, and the cattle, other livestock and wildlife are enjoying a feast after many months of slim pickins. Just a few nights ago I happened to look out the window around midnight and saw two young gray foxes playing on our back porch. When my husband opened the door they were not too concerned about his presence. They stood there and appeared very interested in what he had to say. Only when he clapped his hands did they dart off into the woods.

Hopefully, the rains will continue to get us through the summer and keep our ponds and creeks full. Whatever happens, the central Texas ranch and farmlands are always spectacular, and there is beauty everywhere you look.

Being in the rural central Texas real estate business, we can't imagine how anyone who is looking for property could resist the beauty of the central Texas land at this very moment. If you're considering putting your Bosque, Hamilton or surrounding county ranch up for sale, now is the time to do it as properties are showing extremely well.

Because they can move their wings in a circular motion, they can fly in any direction. They also provide a source of entertainment as they chase off other birds and insects from their feeders.

Devil's Rain

Devil’s Rain

Devil's Rain

Devil’s Rain

Being in the rural central Texas real estate business, we can’t imagine how anyone who is looking for property could resist the beauty of the central Texas land at this very moment. If you’re considering putting your Bosque, Hamilton or surrounding county ranch up for sale, now is the time to do it as properties are showing extremely well.

1942 was the start of the Kokoda Campaign during World War II, so 2012 marks it's 70th anniversary.

By way of background, the Kokoda campaign includes a series of battles between Japanese and Australian troops which took place from July to November 1942 in the Owen Stanley Ranges on Papua New Guinea's main island. The Japanese had landed on the North Coast of and were planning to advance south to Port Moresby (the capital of Papua New Guinea) and eventually go across the seas further south to take Australia.

At the time, PNG had been an Australian protectorate for several years (since the end of World War I) and as a result Australian soldiers were sent to protect Port Moresby from Japanese invasion. The main intention of course was to keep Japanese troops as far away from the Australian mainland as possible.

Modern Day Kokoda

These days, the area is a popular destination for adventure seekers and fundraising trekkers from around the world. The track is called the Kokoda Track, or the Kokoda Trail and consists of rugged terrain throughout the Owen Stanley Ranges. It is covered in dense jungle, so dense that it was never possible to build road or even use animals for transport.

In addition, there is the searing heat of the tropical sun, intense humidty and rain season downpours. As you can imagine, the climate poses a challenge in itself.

The Kokoda Track goes for 96 kilometres and takes most travel groups 10 days to complete, although there are some elite competitors who complete the track in as little as 4 days. The local record of getting from one end of the Kokoda Track to the other is a mere 18 hours.

Of course there is a Kokoda memorial to remember the battles and the soldiers who fought there. The memorial centres around the themes of mateship, courage, endurance and sacrifice.

Trekking the Kokoda Trail

There are many tour operators along the Kokoda Track who provide the necessary comfort for every day people to experience this adventure. They carry your tents, make food, give you the historical background and even carry your luggage if you would like. However, you still need to be physically fit and well prepared for the arduous journey.

Although it is possible to trek the track without an operator, it is recommended that people only travel with an accredited tour company or trustworthy guide for safety.

Tour operators offer different types of tracks, such as charity tracks (where the trekkers raise money for a chosen charity), women-only tracks, extended tours visiting the North Coast of PNG and anniversary tours, such as for the Kokoda Campaign 70th anniversary.

To ensure you choose the right touring operator and the right type of track for you, make sure you do your research. Otherwise a carefully planned adventure could turn into an outright disaster.
